***NOTE: The current stock of these shirts has “U.S.N.” stenciled on the left chest pocket.
The N-3 shirt was part of the “N” system of special purpose clothing (the N-1 Deck Jacket being the most notable) developed by the Navy in late WW2. This shirt is a plain weave cotton, suitable for the heat of the Pacific Theatre, and due to the high volume produced, continued to be issued all the way through Vietnam.
The N-3 shirt replaced the chambray shirt, and has every bit of the utility of that garment. This reproduction has been trimmed up to a more contemporary fit, losing the long tails typical of the era.
